Recent research, including swab testing wheelie bins, shows a dramatic rise in dangerous organisms living in bins. These organisms include e.coli, salmonella and staphylococcus aureus (the cause of gastroenteritis).
Even more alarming was the finding that in bins not emptied for 2 weeks, the level of bacteria was over 8,000 times over the ‘healthy’ level.
Contributing factors include sun exposure, high temperatures and bins not being cleaned. The research also raises questions over the impact on workers emptying bins as well on the environment from run off*.
